Chapter 26

Gray stepped quickly from the shower, grabbed the towel he’d draped over the side of the tub, and circled the dense terry around his hips. He could feel droplets of water trickling down the hairs on his legs and pooling on the tile beneath his feet. Normally, this state of partial wetness drove him crazy. Even now he was itching to dry off properly, but the pinging of his phone from the vanity counter was growing insistent.

Gray reached for it with one hand, while using the other to rip an oversized hand towel from the ring on the wall. As he dried his face, his eyes came to rest on the text Kory had just sent.

Can I come over?

Gray felt his pulse speed up and he damn near fumbled the phone as his foot caught the edge of a bath mat and slipped. At the last second, he managed to brace himself against the dark wood cabinetry of the sink, and he gripped the phone tighter in reflex.

“Dude, what the hell is your problem? You just soaked half the damn floor in here!”

Lee was standing in the doorway, his orange Home Depot apron clenched in one fist as he surveyed the room with irritation. His dark brown buzz cut was mussed with dried sweat and what appeared to be flecks of dirt. Even before Gray could respond, his brother was tossing his apron in the hamper and stripping out of a heavily soiled T-shirt.

“Long day at the office, dear?”

Lee flipped him off before sending his muddy cargos sailing through the air. Gray dodged with a laugh as the filthy pants landed on the edge of the vanity, taking out the bottle of SoftSoap in the corner.

“Oh, man, you look like Mr. Clean’s bastard son who rolled around in pig shit.”

“Swear jar, fuckwad.”

Gray laughed even harder. His brother was smiling now, a hint of ruddiness staining his tan cheek as he reached for a clean towel to hang near the shower.

“I crashed into a pallet of topsoil, okay.” His brother’s confession hung in the humid air of the bathroom for a second before they both started rolling, Lee’s grimy shoulders shaking with mirth.

“Dude, they are never going to let me drive that loader again,” he choked out, as he opened the shower door and flipped the water back on.

“Uh, yeah, probably not. What happened? You get distracted or something?”

Lee’s face reddened as he adjusted the showerhead to a blistering power wash setting. “Yeah, or somebody,” he mumbled.

Gray smiled, knowing exactly whose body had been distracting his brother. “Etta stopped by, huh?”

Lee lobbed a pair of boxer briefs at him in response, then stepped towards the shower. Before his filthy toes could even touch the water, Gray’s phone pinged again. Immediately, Lee’s eyes darted to it, and he stepped back with an interested look. It was nearly ten o’clock at night, and Gray’s limited social network left little doubt as to who was most likely texting him so late in the evening.
